The FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus is a continuous glucose monitoring system worn on the back of the upper arm. Unlike a standard blood sugar meter that gives you one number at one moment, this cgm device sends a new reading to your phone every single minute, all day and all night, for up to 15 days. That is one extra day of wear compared to the original Libre 3, and it means only six sensors are needed for a full 90 day supply instead of seven.
The sensor is about the size of two stacked pennies. There is no transmitter to charge and no scanning required, readings simply appear on the freestyle libre 3 plus app the moment you unlock your phone. A separate reader is available if you prefer not to use a smartphone.
Check Blood Sugar With Phone, Not With Needles
This is the part people notice first. Once the 60 minute warm up period ends, you check blood sugar with phone by glancing at the Libre 3 app or the Libre 3 reader. Glucose data streams over Bluetooth automatically, no scanning motion needed like older Libre models required. You can also share live numbers with up to 20 caregivers through LibreLinkUp, or send reports to your doctor through LibreView.
Fingersticks are still occasionally needed, specifically when your symptoms do not match the reading or during the first 12 hours if the app flags a check. Abbott and most endocrinologists still recommend keeping a backup blood sugar meter at home for exactly this reason.
